BALLOON TOURS

baloncappadocia

Cappadocia, a region in central Turkey, is known for its distinctive and surreal landscapes of tall cone-shaped rocks, “fairy chimneys”, impressive valleys, orchards and vineyards. It ranks among the top 3 balloon flights in the world owing to it’s array of colors and unique geological natural formations.

Excellent flying conditions allow the balloons to drift high above tall formations as well as to dip deep into the secluded valleys. As the sun rises and the balloons drift silently across the landscape, the formations come alive in an animated dance of nature which must be seen to be experienced.

Private balloon flights are ideal for special occasions, weddings,  anniversaries, honeymoons, graduation gifts and birthdays.

History of Hot Air Ballooning

History reveals that man has always wanted to fly. Early cave drawings show man attempting to fly with wings.
Joseph & Jacque Montgolfier in the late 1700’s were best known as inventors of the hot air balloon. The two brothers were in the paper manufacturing business and developed a new paper combining paper and silk. When they watched paper burn, they noticed that little pieces of unburned paper and ashes would
rise in the air. They decided if they could capture this air, man would be able to use this to fly.

The first balloon flight was conducted by the Montgolfier brothers from Annonay, France on June 5, 1783. The first passengers were actually a pig, a duck and a rooster. The balloon flew 1 mile from the starting point. On November 21, 1783, Pilatre de Rozier and Marquis d’Arlandes made the first manned flight in a
Montgolfier balloon from the centre of Paris to the City’s suburbs.

There were many advances to ballooning for about 150 years, before a surging interest in fixed wing aircraft. The rebirth of ballooning occurred in 1960 when Ed Yost developed techniques that made hot air ballooning practical. Using a propane buner, Yost heated the air inside the nylon balloon. Today, Ed Yost is
considered the father of modern day ballooning.

FAQ’S

 Where do we fly?
We change our take-off site every day depending on wind speed and direction.

 What should I wear?
Long trousers and tops/shirts with long sleeves , preferably made from natural fibers.Layers are a good idea as it is cold on departure and warmer on landing.
Comfortable shoes are essential as you will be standing for the duration of the ride and may need to
walk in a field to a minibus. If you are blessed with height, wearing a hat is recommended because of the radiant heat from the burners

How high up do we go?
We always go up to 500 meters (1600 feet) and if the wind is calm can go up to 1,000 meters (3200 feet). We will go low and close to the ground. On occasions, we will go low enough to sometimes pick fruit from trees.

Are children permitted?
Children 12 years and older can fly with a responsible adult. Children under the age of 12 are not allowed.

Do we fly year around?
Yes, we fly 12 months/year. From October to March there are often cancellations due to weather conditions.

When do we cancel flights?
When ground wind exceeds 10 knots, during heavy rain or fog, flights will be cancelled. A full refund is provided upon weather cancellations.

How far do we fly?
Depending on the speed of the wind, we can travel between 4-20km (2.5-12 miles).

Are pregnant women allowed to fly?
No, it is not recommended for women who are pregnant or think they might be pregnant because of possibly bumpy landings.

Are landings bumpy?
Most landings are calm, but sudden wind increase can cause a bumpy landing. With windy conditions, the basket can drag on the landing field until it comes to a halt.

What time is pick-up from hotel or residence?
A van will meet passengers 45 minutes before sunrise and bring you to the office for check-in and breakfast.

Why do we fly so early in the morning?
We take off with the sunrise and fly during the golden hour for photography, weather permitting. At sunrise, the wind is calm, there are no thermals and it is not too hot

How do we get back to hotels?
Minibuses follow the balloons during flight. They meet you near balloon landing sites and return you to your hotel.

What happens if a bird flies into a balloon?
Balloons are so large that most birds avoid them. The envelope fabric is much tougher than it might appear and a bird would likely bounce off if there was a collision. Balloon maufacturers have performed tests which demonstrate that they can be flown even with a hole.

How long does it take to inflate and deflate a balloon?
Ground crews can inflate and launch a balloon in 15 minutes or less. It takes about the same amount of time to deflate and pack up a balloon after flight.

What if my flight is cancelled due to weather conditions?
If weather does not permit, a flight may be cancelled. Your deposit will be refunded. The crew will also check if you are free the next day and will try to rebook you depending on space availability. We suggest you book your flight for the first free morning to provide
options in case of cancellation.

Are there regulations for flights?
The Turkish Aeronautical Associate regulates flight permissions. Rain, fog, snow or wind above 10 knots/hour are among the conditions determining flights.

How much time should I allow for the flight?
From start to finish, the adventure will last about 3 hours. Breakfast, balloon preparation and inflation normally takes about 30 minutes and is quite incredible to see. The flights take about 1 hour for standard and 1.5 hours for deluxe flights. After the flight, the post-flight celebration takes about 30 minutes. Travel back to your hotel is usually about 30 minutes. Balloons always carry sufficient fuel for more than 2 hours flight time plus a 30
minute reserve capacity.

How are balloon pilots licensed?
Balloons are registered like any other aircraft and are subject to regular air safety checks.
The FAA will not allow a balloon to be certified as airworthy without inspection performed by authorized maintenance personnel. All pilots are licensed by the FAA and have to pass regular flight checks.
